I installed both of these updates, and I noticed that the file versions of the updated files in the System32 folder do not, in fact, match the versions that the associated KnowledgeBase articles say should have been installed. For example, ntoskrnl.exe should be 6.0.6000.20629. Instead, it is 6.0.6000.16514. The updated files does exist in a subfolder in Winsxs, however. How can one tell if the updates actually installed correctly? I am mystified.
I've installed these patches (x86, dell D820 laptop) and they are good stuff. Vista is much better - much more responsive, particuarly when I'm using lots of ram. Almost feels like XP again!
However, my and a workmate are finding the system process spins (~80% cpu) and constantly eats ram if I boot with any USB devices plugged in. After less than 5 minutes vista stops responding and the screen goes black If I boot with nothing plugged in its fine. sleep/resume is also fine, even with devices plugged in. |
