Vista RTM does not regenerate a missing or corrupt Infcache.1 in the System32 directory - causing device driver installation errors

This finally explains the reason why one of my desktop Vista machines at home could never properly find device drivers, even though the device drivers were included with the installation CD of Vista! I always had to manually point it to certain directories so that it could do the right thing.

I am sure I am not the only one that has encountered this problem!

SYMPTOMS
When you try to install a new hardware device on a Windows Vista-based computer, Windows Vista cannot install the driver for the hardware device successfully. Additionally, you may sometimes receive the following error message:

Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device. Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.

CAUSE
If the Infcache.1 file is deleted or corrupted, Windows Vista does not recreate the Infcache.1 file.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, install this hotfix. Then, try to install the hardware device again.

Contacted MS (via the email hotfix request form) and got 2 difference responses (x86 + x64)
* We have received your request for a hotfix; however the hot fix you are mentioning is no longer available.
* Currently we do not have hotfix for the issue mentioned in the KB940199.

I'm guessing the fix isn't rolled out yet as the KB was only published yesterday so will try again in a day or two...

The hotfix is not available!

I would like to resolve this i've had this problem for months now!

I have the same problem and no fix or answers. Contacted Microsoft and was told nothing we can do. Told to pay for tech how can't give me a hotfix or solve the problem. That's MICROSOFT, takes your money, gives you a CRAPY product and then won't help you. Isn't that theft under false pretenses???? Talking about a company that has all of the money in the world and still rips you off... Anyway, if you have a solution to this problem that works send it to me, please.... sabyg00@hotmail.com
