This new behavior in Vista had me frustrated. I have traditionally used routing and remote access in Server 2003 to secure wireless connections by requiring a VPN connection before the client could communicate with anything. This worked great for Windows XP. As soon as the XP machine connected to the wireless AP, it could establish a VPN connection. With Vista the computer would attempt to asses internet connectivity first. The wireless was configured behind a firewall that only allowed VPN connections through it to connect to the IP address of the VPN server. These restrictions cause Vista to fail the internet connectivity check. Interrestingly enough, Vista will not allow an outgoing VPN connection to occur if it believes there is no internet connectivity.
Isn't that great!
Hi Aaron,
What do you mean : I've had to jump through hoops to get online properly. ??? Is it a way to bypass the portal and surf without registration ? I do manage hotspots in hotels and have problems with clients using Vista. Thx for your help. Thierry |
